Ice Candles

 Yesterday we made Ice Candles.

My favourite part was opening the ice candle because I had know idea that a lot of water was going to pour out of the sides .

All you need to make this is

Old candle wax

An empty milk carton ( washed out )

Oil

ice

Long candle

Here are the steps to make an Ice candle.

1. Cut open a milk carton

2. Rub oil all over the inside of the carton

3. Put the long candle in the middle

4. Fill it with ice

5. Melt the candle wax

6. Pour the candle wax into the carton

7. Wait 24 hours for it to harden

8. When its dry rip the carton off

9. Make sure all the water is out

10. Enjoy!

I found it really hard to rip the carton of because we didn't rub the oil all over the sides properly.

Here are some Photos.

look at the cover design and illustration and read the title and blurb of the story. What appeals to you? What does not appeal to you? Do they make you want to read the story? Why or why not? Write your thoughts in the boxes below.

Blurb

I think that Tam is going to be loyal to his crew and take risk and face a captin by having a sword fight.

Cover

The cover shows a pirate. I think that the pirate comes to the island infested with mutant rats.

Title

I think that it's called rat island because there are just rats  and they are evil but they look after the island from people and animals.

Here is my letter :

GÖe moira Editor,

St Mary is a Green Gold Enviroschool. We have been trying to keep our Rerenga Awa (River Garden) clean and are trying to encourage native birds and insects to come to our garden down by the awa. But it’s hard because we can’t plant any more trees or native plants because the Council has stopped mowing and now there is blackberry in the way. We have called the Council and asked if they could spray the blackberry and mow the all the tall grass so that we can plant more native trees, plants and bushes. Some people have visited them. Someone has used the Fix It app. But there was no response to any of this. We need to plant trees close to the Rerenga Awa to provide shade to encourage freshwater creatures to come and live there. We also want to provide places for native birds and insects to stay at our Rerenga Awa. I firmly believe the Council should come and spray the blackberry and mow the tall grass so St Mary’s School can keep planting native trees and bushes for our wildlife.

Yours sincerely,

Morgan

Matariki
What is Matariki?
Matariki is a time for New Zealanders and other countries to celebrate Matariki.
When it is nearly the time for Matariki, New Zealanders can harvest their crops ready for Matariki.

Matariki Legend
One of the legends is when Matariki fell in love in the sky  and had babies (shes a star by the way and she is the star of hope and health and wellbeing )
And her first child wasPōhutukawa
Pōhutukawa is the star of connected to the one who have passed away.
Then Matariki had Tupuānuku.
Tupuānuku is the star connected with everything that grows in the soil  to be harvested or just gathered for food ready to eat.
Then came Tupuārangi.
Tupuārangi is the star connected with the trees and thing that grow on the tree and with the tree like birds , fruit  and berries.
And she had more and more.
The 9 sisters
I have already told you about Pōhutukawa , Tupuānuku,  Tupuārangi and Matariki but Matariki is the mum but we still call it the 9 sister.
I have told you four stars but I still got to tell you the other five.
The twins Waitā and Waitī . But Waitī is the oldest out of both of them.
Waitī is connected with fresh rivers and food sources within.
Waitā is associated with the ocean and seafood.
Two down three to go.
Waipuna-ā-Rangi.
Waipuna-ā-Rangi is connected with the rain.
Ururangi is the star connected with the wind.
Last one.
Hiwa-i-te-Rangi  is the star connected with granting our wishes and our aspirations.
Now I will tell you about Dr. Matamua.
Dr. Matamua was a Māori astronomer he has been researching stars for over 30 years.
Dr. Matamua was the one who found out that there was nine stars and not seven.

This picture doesn't include all the sisters.
